Parents worried about protecting their children from cyber predators are urged to sign up for a free computer safety workshop offered by Wellington Information and Neighbourhood Services.
“As a parent, I am constantly monitoring the children’s use of the internet and am always worrying about potential threats,” WINS manager Alison Conn said.
“In response to these concerns, WINS is offering a free hands-on workshop on May 16 to help parents provide the best protection for their children online.”
CTC@Wellington is sponsored by the Attorney General’s Department to provide parents with comprehensive information on how to avoid some of the pitfalls of cyber crime.
“In my work I have had the misfortune of seeing local people from all walks of life being stalked, bullied and preyed upon by cyber predators and am extremely aware of the threats. This can happen to anyone and it does happen in Wellington,” Ms Conn said.
“That said, the vast majority of internet usage is safe and the educational and social benefits of the internet to many is recognised.
“This workshop will be a great way for parents to be aware of pitfalls and to put in place tools to deal with potential issues, while still allowing their children to benefit from access to the internet.”
All parents are welcome to attend, however places are limited so bookings are essential.
The workshop follows on from the successful techno-seniors session which led to the formation of a fortnightly seniors’ computer club.
