It will be David Beaton’s last day as Wellington Council’s general manager today, after 11 months at the helm.
Far from being dissatisfied with the position, Mr Beaton is returning to South Australia to be closer to family.
“It wasn’t meant to be like this,” he said of the shift back west. “But that’s how it has to be.”
On leaving Wellington, Mr Beaton described it as a “good town and council has a good environment to work in”.
“It’s a nice place, a very pretty area. The staff here are good to work with and it’s a great community.”
Mr Beaton listed the recent formation of an Aboriginal Working Party and the upcoming refurbishment of the old Clancy’s building as highlights of his time in Wellington.
He also believes economic developments such as the proposed power station will be a boost for the local area.
Mayor Anne Jones spoke very highly of Mr Beaton in light of his departure and believes he will be greatly missed.
“In his time in Wellington, David brought forward his wealth of experience and business acumen which he has gained through many years as a general manager in Local Government,” Cr Jones said.
“He has a commonsense approach and promotes an environment which facilitates the council senior staff and councillors working as a team.”
Of his achievements, Cr Jones said “David has been a driving force in completing the recommendations of the Best Practice Review undertaken by the Department of Local Government”.
“Another achievement has been the adoption of a strategic five-year plan which brought out his vision for the Wellington community in partnership with our elected members.
“David has been an inspiration to the Wellington community and will be sadly missed.”
Mr Beaton will take up a position as CEO of the Berri Barmera Council in South Australia.
