The Barnardos homework centre has expanded its days of operation from one to five afternoons a week.
The centre has been in operation since 2002 and was established to support, tutor and coach children and young people at risk of early school leaving and homelessness.
The program aims to improve long term educational, health and employment outcomes by lifting school performance, providing one-on-one tutoring, improving self esteem and confidence and promoting a positive attitude towards education.
Most of the young people attending the homework centre have difficult and complex family and personal circumstances and most are Indigeneous.
Attending students are provided with afternoon tea and tutorial support in a friendly relaxed environment with transport being provided for participants to and from the homework centre.
Once students have completed their homework they are then given a little time to pursue any “special interests” such as cooking, arts/crafts, sports or computers.
With the expansion of the homework centre has come the inclusion of involving volunteers from the community to help support these students achieve their educational goals.
At present, Barnardos has two wonderful volunteers who have experience in youth work and educational support.
