Fire concerns

4/07/2008 11:35:00 AM
A spate of winter grass fires has caused concern for the Wellington Rural Fire Service.

Volunteer firefighters have been called out three times this week to blazes in the district, prompting a call for landholders to speak up if they have plans to burn-off.

RFS operations officer Paul Whiteley attributed the fires to farm owners ‘clearing up’ on their properties.

The first callout was on Tuesday, where a fire destroyed about 28ha (70 acres) at Wuulumun.

Two separate fires were extinguished yesterday, at Geurie and west of the Bell River on the outskirts of Wellington.

While it is uncommon for spontaneous grass fires at this time of year, Mr Whiteley said any blaze was possible considering the dry conditions.

However, the cause is more likely to be regular clearing that has been spotted by passers-by and reported to the fire brigade.

Mr Whiteley urged landowners to be vigilant in both notifying the authorities and tending to the burning off before it gets out of hand.

“Landowners need to notify of their intention to burn,” Mr Whiteley said.

Operations officer Laurie Douglas agreed, pointing out that there were three important points of contact.

“They need to advise the fire control centre, the local captain and their neighbours,” Mr Douglas said.

It is also illegal for the owner not to keep a close eye on the fire at all times.

“Under the act, they should be in attendance at all burns,” he said.

Mr Douglas said the blazes in the past few days had been notifiable burns which were all reported to Triple 0, inciting the emergency response.

Mr Whiteley described this as a double-edged sword.

“We need people to let us know if they are tidying up, but to also call Triple 0 if there are serious concerns.”
