That’s exactly what the Wellington Community Children’s Centre have done, with great success.

As part of the Let’s Read program, family members visited the school for morning tea and to share the importance of reading.

The day was organised by Deb Malone of Barnados with the assistance of community partners such as WACHS and Communities for Children.

Grandparents interacted with the children and staff, helping them to use their imaginative skills to create a ‘dress up’ version of their grandparents, parents, or special friends.

The morning tea was a great success, with 15 grandparents in attendance.

It was great to see that other partners were in attendance to mark this important initiative for children.

Ms Malone donated library bags which will come in handy for the children’s future borrowing.

According to the preschool staff and committee, the program was a great initiative, placing an emphasis on the importance of learning to read.

Early childhood children are currently learning through pictures and telling stories through drawings, which leads to much a more composed recognition of literacy and language.
