Students take lead from Governor

27/06/2008 12:04:00 PM
St Mary’s School captains and student representative council members have attended a student leadership program at State Parliament and Government House.

The students had the opportunity to visit both chambers of parliament and listen to talks on the parliamentary process by Marie Ficarra MLC and staff involved in parliamentary committees.

Following the visit to the chambers, the students listened to an inspirational and moving talk by Mahboba Rawi, an Australian woman who was a refugee from Afghanistan following the invasion of her country by the Russian army in the early 1980s.

A highlight of the day was a meeting of Her Excellency, professor Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW who made special mention of the students who had travelled down from Wellington.

“It is an honour to attend these occasions with our students who don’t often have the chance to visit Parliament and Government house,” principal Brian Lacey said.

Mr Lacey said the students were excellent in the way they presented themselves to Ms Marie Ficarra MLC and Her Excellency, the Governor.

“Once again the students were a credit to themselves, their family and the Wellington District,” Mr Lacey said.
