Thumbs up for crews

Freezing days spent in a boat on Lake Burrendong have been the order of the day for local volunteers since a 21-year-old Dubbo man went missing on June 21.

While police and rescue helicopters, divers and other emergency services were stood down throughout the week, Burrendong Volunteer Rescue Services (VRA) are still spending their days searching.

This also at a time when their resources are limited due to problems with headquarters.

Burrendong VRA publicity officer Kevin Brown said volunteers are out on the water daily from first thing, battling the chill, until late in the afternoon.

“Our people were there from day one when the man went missing and the VRA have had a crew out in the boat all day, every day,” Mr Brown said.

“With the frost in the mornings and the freezing cold wind coming off the water the search has been very difficult.”

The VRA has been involved in a dispute with Burrendong State Park Trust over where the organisation should be housed.

The difficulties erupted in August last year when the VRA was told they would have to vacate the headquarters they had spent countless hours and thousands of dollars on.

Things were looking up in February when they were told a new shed would be built, but Mr Brown said the VRA had recently been informed the funding could not be found.

“In order to carry out rescue activities we need to access the boat, which is underneath the old headquarters. When the boat shed was installed we made it accessible only through the top level to discourage thieves,” Mr Brown said.

“Now we have to find park manager Peter Beatty to unlock the top half of the building so we can access the boat and our radio control room.

“This area is now cluttered with equipment that had to be moved from upstairs, making both the boat and the radio equipment hard to get to.”

Police will be meeting on Friday to discuss the next step in the search.

Wellington police sergeant Rod Buhr said the VRA had done a fantastic job on the search and were welcome to continue their efforts while ever they have the manpower.
