 Reid unaffected by cold day

Reid unaffected by cold day

27/06/2008 12:11:00 PM
It had to come eventually and it did at last Saturday’s Wellington Soldiers’ Memorial Club-sponsored Individual Stableford event. The first touch of winter hit with just 29 players braving the cold, cloudy yet dry conditions. David Ryan was observed in a short-sleeved shirt so it mustn’t have been too bad.

Matt Reid was the winner on the day with 40 points, closely followed by Rod Irwin with 39 on a count back. Other ball competition winners were Paul West 39, Kevin Reid 37, Ben McCarthy 37, Harrison McMahon 36, Mac Harvey 36 and Garth Watts 36.

Nearest the Pin winners were Peter Payne 8th, Colin Sheridan 14th and Geoff Walker 16th.

The McDonald’s Family Restaurant’s Biggest Whack was taken out by Paul West for A Grade and Kevin Whale B Grade. It seems Kevin’s move to town has given him a clear advantage over his former travelling companions. More on that later.

Nathan Smith’s Nearest the Pin in two shots on the fourth won him an award.

The previous week’s Bradman winner, Neil Hollow, took home another prize this week by winning the raffle. This week’s Bradman award went to Neil’s travelling companion Norm Royal with 28 points. It has been suggested that if there was a ladies prize to be awarded in the men’s competition, Marg Hollow would have to be a contender. This would be for her designated driver duties in getting this carload of winners home and listening to their accounts of how they go home winners each week. It could be argued that the boys might be working too hard and not getting enough golf practise in.

Tomorrow’s event, sponsored kindly by Peter Payne is an Individual Stableford combined with round four of the Kiss Trophy and round three of the Captain’s Shield.

The Putt for a Plasma competition continues tonight and every Friday night. This is great value and not restricted to members. For just $20 there’s entry in the competition, an Alan Ritchie-cooked steak meal, free bus to and from, not to mention a great night of fun for all. Ring the club on 6845 2130 for more details.

A copy of the Captain’s Log has been leaked to the press not to mention the 29 players in attendance last Saturday.

John Gersbach as captain has raised a few points in his log that are included here.

Players are asked to nominate for play as soon as possible after arriving at the club, preferably by 12.30pm.

This will let some of the pressure off the starters. Players are reminded of the dress code for golf. In particular, track pants are an example of non-compliance with the code. Please TOO (Think Of Others) and repair your pitch marks and any others that may have been accidentally or otherwise overlooked.

As a matter of courtesy, if you are due to play a match, please communicate with your opposition particularly if you cannot play so as players are not left at the club waiting for you. The captain asks that you keep in mind that if your side cannot play on the nominated day and you do not organise to play beforehand, your side will forfeit.

A match committee meeting will be held tomorrow at 11am. As the position of captain will become vacant next year, anyone interested in what the role involves is invited to attend this meeting.
