Friday night games attracts large crowd

2/07/2008 4:29:00 PM
We had the biggest crowd so far for our Friday night games last Friday. People were queued up to play darts, pool and indoor bowls and they all enjoyed themselves.

The Wellington Times was well represented right from the boss to the copy boy who writes this rubbish. The sports writer, the advertising rep, the photographer, you name them and they were there and the club was very pleased to see them.

The winners on the night were Darelle Maxfield and Peter Watson, with Heather Mezes and Roy Kippax coming in second.

Four teams had to play off for a second place. The play-off had to be darts and there was not one competitor spared.

Ken’s kitchen was running hot with steaks, fish, hamburgers etc being in big demand, the quality of the meal was very high and the prices very low.

It’s on again this Friday night, names in by 7pm, the games start at 7.30pm and everyone is invited to play.

There will possibly be a card game introduced very soon so there is something for everybody.

The first round of the Minor Singles was played last Saturday with the following results: Bill Meharg def Trevor Messenger 31 to 18; Paul Manning def Mick Wall 31 to 23. Allan Manning forfeited to Norm Johnston and Laurie Stanley forfeited to Keith Sullivan.

The second round will be played this weekend with the following bowlers taking part: Kevin Stanley will play Norm Johnston, marker Mark Ahearn; Peter Baker v Tim Maxfield, marker Doug Ney; Keith Sullivan v Hans Ross, marker Laurie Stanley; Roger Darby v Mike Connelly, marker Bruce Lee; Shaun May v Charlie Morley, marker Allan Manning; Paul Manning v Ken Shankleton, marker Mick Wall; Wal Jones v Keith O’Grady, marker Graham Parkes; Bill Meharg v Doug Thomas, marker Trevor Messenger.

Some games will have to be played on Sunday as Garry King has only one green in play, these teams will be advised on Friday.

Saturday’s games will start at 1pm and the rule is play or forfeit, anyone who cannot mark would they please let the players or myself know as early as possible.

Ted Roberts and Terry Jackson were the winners of last Wednesday’s mid-week jackpot pairs, Roy and Ted King came in second.

There were only 14 bowlers taking part and it is all due to the colder weather.

The jackpot did not go off and so should be worth about $260 today. The mid-week raffle went to Ken Shankleton and I think he cooked it last Friday night.

Bowls today will start at 1.30pm, visitors are welcome to play and the names are required by 1pm.

If you are a visitor and did not bring your bowls with you, not to worry, there are plenty of bowls and you can phone the club on 6845 1973.

The final game in the “Sevens Up” will be played this Sunday.

Mick Wall is way out in front in this game, but that does not mean that he will take the number one prize money.

There is first, second and third prize money to be had in this game, so second and third prize is open to all that play, and everybody has a chance to take home cash.

Names are required by 1pm and the games will start at 1.30pm.

You will play seven ends of bowls in each game. Creams would be preferred on the day.

The Joe and Hubert Logue Memorial Day will be held on July 20.

This game was to be held this Sunday, but due to only one green in play we have decided to carry it over.

This will be a half-day game and the dress is definitely creams.

There is a nomination sheet on the board and the game will be open triples.

Our president Allan Manning’s wife is on the sick list and all the members of the club wish her a speedy recovery.

Until next week I will see you somewhere on the green or in the club.
